Festivus For The Restuvus: A Holiday For Everyone 

As a bandleader and entertainer, I've played many Winter Holiday shows.  Two things gave me a headache: 1) How to include everyone and, 2) How to spread light, joy & love without ignoring the reality of our messed up world.  The answer came when I produced my first Festivus show, back in 2011:  Festivus is completely fictitious; it means whatever we want.  So we celebrate all the emotions and memories that the holiday season dredges up, in a spirit of multi-cultural inclusiveness.

Our Festivus Community 

The Festivus campaign funds the show itself (artists, publicity, etc.) and the remainder is donated to a good cause.  In Austin, we support the work of SAFE Alliance [ www.safeaustin.org ].  This year we are expanding with a show in Buda to benefit Buda's Brightside.

Beyond financial support for community organizations, our Festivus Celebrations help bring people together through music and humor, to strengthen our sense of community.  If you've ever felt the holiday blues, where the forced cheerfulness and commercialization of the season just make you feel more lonely and uninspired, then Festivus may be for you!

The Impact 

Festivus originated from an episode of the Seinfeld Show.  Over the years it has spread; people around the world celebrate Festivus with tongue-in-cheek activities.  Because it is transparently fictitious, and its rituals so arbitrary (Feats Of Strength, Airing Of Grievances), it is very democratic and inclusive.  For our Festivus Celebration we emphasize the spirit of community.  Our band, The Festivians, perform songs from around the world, and we encourage audience participation, as well as in the pre-Festivus preparations.  Share your thoughts, your art and, of course your Grievances!

Help Us Keep It Going 

Festivus is foremost about having fun.  But our larger mission is to expand and strengthen community.  This is more important than ever in these polarized times.  Through music and humor, we celebrate our common humanity, even as we poke fun at ourselves.  Our team of performers, visual artists, stage hands, community outreach representatives, all invest time, labor and money into the project.  We're trying each year to reach more people, spread a little more fun and happiness to the folks who need it.
